Abdominal Surgery in Patients over 60 Years of Age

Abstract
The increasing number of aged persons in our population 1n generally appreciated and the. responsibilities of the surgeon to the older patient have been emphasized in a number of appropriate publications in recent years.
It is essetial that we learn everything possible about the nature of the advanced geriatric"patient and his reaction to operative stress.
This study is an analysis of 152 abdominal operations which were performed in 144 patients over 60 years of age at Korea General Hospital during period of 4 years and 9 months from November, 1968 to July, 1673.
The results are as follows:
1. The sex.distribution was. 79 males(52%)- and 73 females (48%)
2. Non-malignant diseases occurred in 105 cases(69%) and malignant diseases in 47 cases(31%). Biliary tract disease was commonest among the non-malignancy and carcinoma of stomach among the malignancy.
3. There were 32 operations on the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, 6 on the small iintestine alone, 20 on the appendix, 18 on the colon and rectum, 58 on the biliary tract7and pancreas and 73 in the miscellaneous category.
4. There were other significant disease processes coexisting in 89 cases(58. 6%). Arterioscle rotic heart disease and pulmonary tuberculosis were the most commonly encountered.
5. There were 39 cases(25.7%) fo nonfatal operative complications and wound infections werethe most frequently encountered.
6. There were 8 deaths, an operative mortality of 5.3%. Of the patients who succumb, 5 were operated on as an emergency, and 3 as an ellective.
The commonest causes of death were lung complications, hepatic failure and sepsis. 7. Average hospital stay was 18 days.
